In a dramatic turn of events, Ghana’s Minority Caucus staged a walkout in Parliament on Thursday, May 29, 2025, in protest against the arrest and detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was taken into custody by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following allegations of financial misconduct.

The Arrest and Bail Controversy

Chairman Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, after reporting to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for questioning. EOCO subsequently detained him, citing ongoing investigations into alleged financial irregularities. While he was granted bail set at GH¢50 million with two sureties, both to be justified, reports indicate that he struggled to meet the conditions, leading to an extended stay in EOCO custody.

The Minority Caucus, led by Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, expressed outrage over what they described as an unjust and politically motivated detention. Afenyo-Markin argued that EOCO had deliberately imposed excessive bail conditions to keep Wontumi in custody, despite his willingness to cooperate with investigations.

Parliamentary Walkout and Protest

In response to Wontumi’s continued detention, the Minority Caucus staged a walkout during parliamentary proceedings. Before exiting the chamber, Minority MPs stood in unison, chanting a line from Ghana’s national anthem: “And help us to resist oppressors’ rule with all our will and might forevermore”. This symbolic act underscored their stance against what they perceive as an abuse of state power.

Afenyo-Markin further declared that the Minority would boycott all parliamentary activities until EOCO reviewed and adjusted Wontumi’s bail conditions. He urged his colleagues on the Majority side to join the protest, emphasizing that the issue transcended party lines and was a matter of justice.

Public Reaction and Political Implications

The walkout has sparked widespread debate among political analysts and the general public. While some view the Minority’s actions as a necessary stand against perceived injustice, others argue that legal channels should be pursued instead of parliamentary disruptions.

Meanwhile, EOCO has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the investigation, fueling speculation about the nature of the allegations against Wontumi. Sources close to the case suggest that the probe may involve financial transactions linked to state funds and mining interests.

As tensions rise, the Minority Caucus has vowed to continue its protest until Wontumi is released or granted bail under more reasonable conditions. Whether this political standoff will lead to policy changes or further deepen partisan divisions remains to be seen.
