The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after spending six days in detention. His release on Monday, June 2, 2025, followed intense legal battles, political protests, and public outcry.

Genesis of Chairman Wontumi’s Arrest

Chairman Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, by EOCO officers after he honoured an invitation for questioning at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). The charges against him included fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. His arrest was linked to an ongoing investigation into an alleged international organized crime network, with Ghana’s Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) also preparing a separate docket on his activities.

Following his arrest, Wontumi was granted GH₵50 million bail on May 28, with two justified sureties. However, his legal team struggled to meet the bail conditions, leading to his continued detention. On May 30, his lawyers confirmed that the necessary documentation for the sureties had been completed, but his release was delayed due to a pending motion for bail review, which was filed without his explicit consent.

Political and Public Reactions

Wontumi’s detention sparked political unrest, with NPP Members of Parliament staging a walkout from Parliament on May 29 and protesting at EOCO headquarters. They argued that, given his public standing and minimal flight risk, he should have been granted bail on self-recognition. NPP supporters also blocked roads in front of EOCO’s offices, demanding his immediate release.

Former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, played a crucial role in securing Wontumi’s bail, standing as one of the sureties. His properties were verified on June 2, paving the way for Wontumi’s release later that evening.

Chairman Wontumi’s Release and Public Appearance

Upon his release, Wontumi appeared physically weak, reportedly due to refusing to eat during his time in custody. Videos circulating online showed him limping and leaning on NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong for support as he walked out of EOCO headquarters.

A day after his release, Wontumi was seen drinking pure water in a hearty mood, attempting to rally NPP supporters in his typical fiery style. However, his frail appearance at the Mamponghene’s funeral on June 9 reignited concerns about his health. Social media users speculated that he looked scared and weak, possibly fearing another arrest.

Chairman Wontumi’s release marks a significant moment in Ghana’s political landscape. While he is now free, he remains under investigation, with EOCO and other agencies continuing their probe into his alleged financial dealings. His legal team insists that he will cooperate fully with authorities, but the political and legal implications of his case are far from over
