Billed as a “mythological story,” HBO Films’ “Phil Spector” can’t help but be entertaining.
It boasts compelling performances by Academy Award winners Al Pacino as music producing icon Phil Spector and Helen Mirren as his defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden.
And it’s written and directed by David Mamet, Pulitzer Prize-winning and Oscar-nominated playwright.
“Phil Spector” is Mamet’s fictionalized version of the client-attorney relationship between Spector and Baden.
“Phil Spector” is set in Los Angeles in 2007 and begins with the preparation for Spector’s first trial for the 2003 death of actress Lana Clarkson.
Pacino completely transforms into the Spector persona, and Mirren is intriguing as her character works to relate to Spector and get him ready for trial and represent him during the trial.
Costume designer Debra McGuire deserves praise, as well as Pacino’s hair stylist Cydney Cornell and wig maker Renate Leuschner for their contributions to the actor’s absorbing portrayal of Spector.
Another highlight of the movie is the interspersing of Spector’s music throughout the story.
“Phil Spector” premieres at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 24, on HBO.
