Daimler, the German automobile manufacturer known for its Mercedes-Benz brand, introduced the MobiCOIN project at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona, Spain. The project is currently in its experimental phase, revolving around a digital currency designed to reward drivers who adhere to principles of eco-driving.
The pilot started in February and will run for three months, with 500 Mercedes drivers involved in the trial phase. You can win MobiCOINs by achieving a high “environmental score” that takes into account things like smooth acceleration and braking.
The vehicle data is linked to a mobile app that represents the coin purse, and drivers can use the coins for rewards. In order to avoid the possibility of accidents, they can only access their score data in real time after the trips. The drivers who achieve a higher score can then use their MobiCOINs to receive VIP tickets for events such as the MercedesCup finale or the Fashion Week in Berlin.
The new coin presented by Daimler is based on blockchain technology, which supports most existing crypto currencies.
Jonas Von Malottki, a blockchain expert from Daimler’s IT team, said the technology has the power to change mobility.
“Blockchain, with its decentralized architecture, will open up business models and multiply the opportunities for collaboration between large and small businesses,” he added.
Interestingly, Malottki also works on the Hyperledger project and is connected to the blockchain startup XING. The latter is cooperating with Porsche to test blockchain applications for various functions.
If Porsche is the first brand to apply the blockchain to vehicles, Mercedes could be the first to implement its own cryptocurrency. In both cases, Stuttgart is the winner of the two car manufacturers.
