Are you one of the lucky ones to get a first glimpse through Google’s new mobile computing eyewear?
The company has begun shipping 8,000 pairs of Google Glass to individuals who entered a contest to be the first to try out the new eyewear. The winners have to fork over $1,500 for the privilege.
It’s one of the next big steps in bringing “wearable computing” to market. Apple reportedly is working on Internet-connected wristwatches.
As Techradar.com put it, Google Glass essentially frees data from desktop computers and portable devices like phones and tablets, and places it right in front of your eyes.
Google Glass displays data, photos, videos and other content on a small prism screen in the upper-right lense. The display is the equivalent of a 25-inch high-definition screen from 8 feet away, Google said. The futuristic spectacles have a camera, touch pad, battery and microphone built into its frame, which comes in different colors.
Google Glass also responds to commands. You can tell it to take a picture or video, call or text a friend, find a destination, or record an event hands-free. You can then share your images or video with others. Rather than taking your eyes off the road to look at a GPS device, simply glance at the small screen in front of you. The device also will translate your voice into other languages.
Google is being very protective of the gadget. It’s terms of service states the following:
“You may not resell, loan, transfer, or give your device to any other person. If you resell, loan, transfer, or give your device to any other person without Google’s authorization, Google reserves the right to deactivate the device, and neither you nor the unauthorized person using the device will be entitled to any refund, product support, or product warranty.”
While the application process for testing the eyewear is over, Google says “there will be more chances to get Glass at a later date.”
Are you ready for a pair?
